Chiropractic Care

with Dr. Balla

Expert care for you and your whole family.

The purpose of chiropractic is to reduce Nervous System Stress —

— and, by so doing, to permit your body’s natural healing potential to resume its normal function. We are so happy to provide chiropractic care in Traverse City, MI, and the surrounding areas. Dr. Balla reduces Nervous System Stress by analyzing the spinal column and related structures for balance and proper function. When the nervous system is free from spinal stress, the healing power of the body is unleashed.

The Value of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic’s health benefits are much greater than the relief of back or neck pain; it is whole-body health care.

It emphasizes the relationship between the spine and the nervous system, and how that relationship affects function and health.

Spinal misalignments (known as vertebral subluxations) can interfere with the transmission of information from the brain, over the spinal cord and/or nerve roots to any and all systems of the body.

The resulting altered information produces altered function and lowered resistance, which often results in pain, symptoms and ultimately disease.

Chiropractic focuses on maintaining a healthy nervous system to achieve optimal health naturally.

There are a broad range of techniques to locate, analyze and correct vertebral subluxations.

Authentic Health offers Gonstead, Thompson, Diversified, Activator, SOT, and Webster techniques allowing for a customized adjustment for each patient.

The relationship between the spine and the nervous system directly affects body function and health. Spinal misalignments, known as vertebral subluxations, can interfere with the transmission of information from the brain, over the spinal cord and/or nerve roots, to any and all body systems, organs, tissues, and cells.

The resulting altered information transmission produces a serious but often painless condition called “Nervous System Stress” that can: disrupt the proper functioning of the nervous system; weaken internal organs and organ systems; lower resistance; reduce healing potential; and set the stage for sickness and disorders of all types.

“Chiropractic takes care of the spine allowing the nervous system to function optimally. By removing interference to the nervous system, your body is able to unleash its innate ability to heal naturally.”

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see a chiropractor?
You should see a chiropractor as soon as possible to have your spine checked. A person does not need to be in pain to see a chiropractor. Spinal adjustments help a variety of issues that do not necessarily cause pain or discomfort (i.e. constipation, breast feeding, weak immune system, bedwetting, dizziness, infertility, etc.).
Why do I need to come back for adjustments if I feel fine?
A common misperception is that the absence of pain means one is healthy. If I dropped a brick on my foot, I would be in pain, but not necessarily unhealthy. There are people right now walking around our community with cancer and heart disease that have no pain, but are very sick!

Pain is typically the last thing to show up when the body can no longer compensate for the misalignment in the spine. Those misalignments are affecting the nerves from the spinal cord to organs and tissues before pain is felt.

What are some of the benefits of chiropractic care?
There is a wide array of benefits to chiropractic care because when you free the nervous system from interference, it affects every organ, tissue and cell in the body. Some patients experience freedom from pain, increased flexibility, increased energy, improved digestion and elimination, shorter labor, improved immune system, elimination of bedwetting and ear infections, improvement in athletic ability and the list goes on and on.
Does chiropractic help only neck and back pain?
Chiropractic is really about taking care of the nervous system, not about pain. While pain is usually what motivates some patients to come in, pain is usually resolved quickly but it doesn’t mean that the spine is free of vertebral subluxations and nerve interference.
Will I have to come for the rest of my life?

Chiropractic care takes care of your nervous system. Your nervous system is the master system of your body controlling all perceptions and functions.

Our approach 3 phases:

  1. Repair phase: Address any acute symptoms you may be having.
  2. Rebuild Phase: Rebuild the body & nervous system to a high level of health & wellness.
  3. Revitalize Phase: Preserve a high level of health & wellness and reach new heights.

We support our patients whatever their health goals, but consider something, would you ask your dentist if you have to come for the rest of your life? Which do you think is more important, your teeth or your nervous system?

How does chiropractic work?
Dr. Balla identifies the Vertebral Subluxations (misalignment of spinal segments) and makes adjustments using various techniques. These adjustments allow proper nerve flow which leads to improved function.
What is a subluxation and how do you get them?
Vertebral Subluxation is when you have a misalignment of spinal segments associated with a disturbed function of the nervous system.

Vertebral Subluxations often initially occur without pain and other symptoms. There are three types of stress that cause subluxations: Physical (poor posture, lack of exercise, car accident), Biochemical (poor nutrition, caffeine, smoking), and Psychological (money concerns, family issues, and work pressure).

Why is there a “popping” sound when I am adjusted?
Joints that are fixed build up nitrogen gas around them and when the joint is mobilized, it releases the gas.
Is it going to hurt?
Occasionally a patient will feel some soreness after the 1st adjustment. Dr. Balla is very gentle while doing her chiropractic adjustments and will tailor her approach to the patient’s comfort level.
What does an adjustment do?
Adjustments are a non-invasive way of moving spinal segments to correct misalignments.
Why don’t I get adjusted on my first visit?
At the initial office visit, Dr. Balla gathers information from the patient’s personal history, spinal scan and the physical exam. She takes the time to review all of the information and develop a specific protocol for each patient to meet their health goals. Patients can schedule their Review of Findings and first adjustment as soon as the next day.

In special cases when the patient is in acute pain, we may make an exception to this policy.

Is chiropractic safe for all ages?
Yes! Chiropractic is safe from birth to 100+.

Infants and children have growing nervous systems and it is important that there is no interference to the nervous system from vertebral subluxations.

Elderly people need chiropractic to keep their spine mobile and free from interference to the nervous system.

Athletes need chiropractic because they have a lot of wear and tear on their bodies, and if there is a misalignment it can result in aberrant motion which can lead to injuries.

If I’m pregnant, can I still see a chiropractor?
Yes!

Dr. Balla is trained in the Webster technique which is designed to remove nerve interference to the uterus. It also balances the pelvic bowl so there is no distortion in the shape of the uterus, allowing the baby to grow without restriction and move into an optimal position for birth. Dr. Balla recommends that pregnant women begin chiropractic care as soon as possible.

Can a person who has had back surgery see a chiropractor?
Patients that have had surgical intervention can still receive chiropractic care and it may help to prevent future surgeries. Dr. Balla will review all imaging and take a full history to determine the best course of action for each case.
Is everyone adjusted the same?

Adjustments are a non-invasive way of moving spinal segments to correct misalignments.

Is everyone adjusted the same?
No. Dr. Balla is trained in many different techniques and patients are adjusted according to what works best for their body.
Do I have to take my clothes off?
During the spinal scan, patients will need to wear a gown on their upper body during their initial exam and subsequent re-exams. Patients will not remove any clothing for chiropractic adjustments.
Are chiropractors allowed to prescribe medications/drugs?
No, as a chiropractor we do things differently than Medical Doctors. M.D.s take a Mechanistic approach to the body, meaning if you have a stomach problem, they focus on the stomach and prescribe medication for the stomach.

A chiropractor views the body with a Vitalistic approach. We know that everything is connected, and the nervous system controls every function and cell in the body. The same stomach issue may be related to irritation to the spinal nerve that feeds the stomach. Our approach would be to make adjustments to the spine to alleviate stress on the nerve, allowing the body to do the healing.

What type of education do chiropractors receive?
Doctors of Chiropractic are required to attend a chiropractic college that is similar to medical school in length and in most content, but while medical students are learning drugs and surgery, chiropractic students are getting additional neurology, nutrition and adjusting technique courses.
What insurance companies do you accept?
We currently accept Insurance. We are happy to provide Superbills that can be submitted.
We do not accept Medicare Part B patients for chiropractic. Due to the Medicare regulations, if we do not submit to Medicare we are not able to legally see those patients, even if they want to pay cash. We can see patients that only have Medicare Part A as cash patients. Dr. Balla is happy to refer patients with Medicare Part B.

Medicare patients can be seen at our clinic for Nutritional Therapy, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Myofascial Release, Reflexology, Yoga and Massage but none of these services are covered by Medicare.

What if you don’t accept my insurance company?
Here at Authentic Health, we work with our patients. If we are not in network with your insurance company (meaning you have insurance, but we do not submit to them), we have you pay up front and provide you with a “Superbill” that you would submit to the insurance company. We cannot guarantee that they will pay, but we will give whatever codes, pricings and letters you may need for coverage.

Please consider that your copay may be more than your fee for an adjustment with some insurance companies. Check with our staff to determine your most economical choice.

Can I afford this?
At Authentic Health, we work hard to keep our rates reasonable to make care affordable whether or not you have insurance coverage for chiropractic care.
